Three nucleus farms — Haringhata, Salboni and Kalyani — established under the National Project on Cattle & Buffalo Breeding to produce genetically superior Sahiwal and Gir bulls for the State’s Frozen Semen Bull Stations.
About the Programme
Three Bull Mother Farms established under NPCBB — the genetic backbone of West Bengal’s breeding policy
Together these farms maintain over 950 head of cattle — including the country’s largest conservation herd of pure Sahiwal — and supply the genetically superior bulls that populate PBGSBS’s Frozen Semen Bull Stations.
Main Objectives
The four pillars driving the Bull Mother Farm programme
Quality Indigenous Bulls
Produce good-quality, genetically superior bulls of the Sahiwal and Gir indigenous breeds for use across the State’s breeding programme.
Crossbred Sires for FSBS
Produce different cross-bred bulls for use in the network of Frozen Semen Bull Stations (FSBS) at Haringhata, Beldanga and Salboni.
Embryo Transfer Production
Produce bulls through Embryo Transfer Technology (ETT) — integrating advanced reproductive biotechnology with conventional pedigree-based selection.
Performance Evaluation
Continuous evaluation of performance of Sahiwal and Gir cattle in West Bengal’s agro-climatic conditions to inform future breeding decisions.
Bull Mother Farm — Haringhata
Mohanpur, Nadia · NPCBB — National Project on Cattle & Buffalo Breeding
BMF Haringhata
The Bull Mother Farm (BMF) at Haringhata, located in Mohanpur, Nadia district, is a cornerstone of bovine genetic conservation established under the Central Government’s National Project on Cattle and Buffalo Breeding (NPCBB).
Presently, 410 animals are maintained at the farm — including a dedicated wing of over 100 animals kept exclusively as surrogate / recipient cows for the farm’s advanced breeding programmes — mainly of Pure-bred Sahiwal. This is probably the largest conservation project of Sahiwal cows in the country. The farm produces 110 calves during the year. During the current year, BMF Haringhata has supplied 25 bulls to different Frozen Semen Bull Stations within the State.
For scientific disposal of solid farm waste, a vermi-compost unit has been established out of R.K.V.Y fund. A Feed Mixing Unit has also been established from R.K.V.Y fund for the production of good-quality concentrated cattle feed for the farm — with a production of 985 MT during 2025–26.
Bull Mother Farm — Salboni
Paschim Medinipur · Composite State Animal Husbandry Farm Campus
BMF Salboni
Bull Mother Farm, Salboni was established at the campus of the Composite State Animal Husbandry Farm, Salboni, Paschim Medinipur. Mainly elite cows of the Gir breed are maintained at this farm; alongside Gir, Pure Jersey and Holstein Friesian breeds are also kept.
Presently, 290 cattle are housed in this BMF. The Gir cows and heifers — with a high genetic merit — were procured from Gujarat State through the Central Herd Registration Scheme.
For scientific disposal of solid farm waste, a vermi-compost unit has been established out of R.K.V.Y fund. A Feed Mixing Unit has also been established from R.K.V.Y fund for the production of good-quality concentrated cattle feed for the farm — with a production of 540 MT during 2025–26.
Bull Mother Farm — Kalyani
State Livestock Farm, Nadia · State Breeding Policy — established 6 May 2016
BMF Kalyani
The Bull Mother Farm, State Livestock Farm, Kalyani, Nadia, was established to meet the enhanced requirement of frozen semen straws and to replace exhausted bulls of the Frozen Semen Stations of this State.
The main objective of this Bull Mother Farm is to establish a well-managed breeding farm to supply proven sires of different generic architectures to the existing Frozen Semen Stations of the State. The farm will maintain 500 adult cows of different breeds under the Breeding Policy of West Bengal.
The station began operations on 6th May 2016. The present herd strength stands at 250 head of different breeds and is being scaled toward the 500-cow target.
