In-Vitro Fertilization &
Embryo Transfer Technology
Producing High Genetic Merit bovines for West Bengal through Multiple Ovulation & Embryo Transfer, IVF and cryopreservation — at the Haringhata and Salboni laboratories of PBGSBS.
Overview
By 2012, the R&D Wing of PBGSBS at Haringhata had successfully applied Embryo Transfer Technology to produce elite calves of desired breeds, enabling the supply of Bulls and Bull Mothers to meet the State's demand.
In 2022, under the Rashtriya Gokul Mission, the component of Advanced Reproductive Techniques was exercised with the establishment of the In-Vitro Fertilization laboratory at Haringhata (IVF/ETT Lab), making High Genetic Merit animals available across the State.
Embryos can be transferred into recipients or frozen for future use. On average, 10 to 30 calves can be produced from a single donor per year.
Objectives
Goals of the IVF & Embryo Transfer Technology programme
Produce embryos from high-yielding selected GEVV, indigenous pure breeds (like Sahiwal) and 50% crossbred Jersey cows.
Produce and make available genetically superior bulls and bull dams from Sahiwal and 50% Jersey in a faster mode.
Conserve elite germplasm by cryopreservation of embryos.
Use elite females as donors where they have problems in pregnancy maintenance.
Use females with uneconomic production records as recipients.
Improve and sustain the productivity of dairy livestock through biotechnological interventions.
Enable greater and repeated use of elite animals.
Sensitize and motivate farmers to rear indigenous and non-descript cattle, aiming to double their income through advanced reproductive technologies.
Produce elite male and female bovines of indigenous breeds.
Haringhata IVF / ETT Laboratory
The primary IVF facility — established 2022 under Rashtriya Gokul Mission
In-Vitro Fertilization Laboratory, Haringhata
Building on the R&D Wing's success with Embryo Transfer Technology since 2012, the Haringhata IVF/ETT Lab applies Advanced Reproductive Techniques to produce embryos from elite donors. The embryos are transferred into recipient animals or cryopreserved for future use — making High Genetic Merit bovines available across West Bengal.
